You may have noticed that this website is no longer displaying editor.wikidot.com in the address bar when you visit it. Instead, I'm trialling a new domain name: wdeditor.com.

However, I'm looking for your opinion on a problem I've been thinking about for the last 24 hours. When I release Wikidot Writer I will have two separate wikidot editors, and they'll need separate sites. The question is: how do I scale to allow for not just these two, but possibly a third or fourth editor as well?

My only solution so far has been:

  • ste.wdeditor.com — for STE
  • writer.wdeditor.com — for Wikidot Writer

I also own wikidoteditor.com and wikidoteditor.org and can make use of those if needed. Currently they simply redirect back to wdeditor.com (this website).

How many Wikidot editors does one need?! :)

Why not just use one site and have separate categories dedicated to each editor? You'd have to have each subdomain redirect to the same site, but you could create a front door similar to what Bryce did with his sites.

I like the subdomain setup - it makes a lot of sense (and you don't have to go an register a bunch of extra domain names - saves some cash). You should be able to point each of those at a different Wikidot site if you want to keep your projects separated.

Which host/registrar did you end up using?

And I will probably need separate sites:

  1. Different programming languages (Java, C#)
  2. That means they both need different installation instructions
  3. While one runs on the JRE, the other runs on Mono (or the .NET framework in Windows)

If both were written in Java, then perhaps having them both on the same site would make sense.

Just under $10 each, per year. If I remember correctly, it was $8 for the first year and $9 for every year thereafter - both .com and .net are the same price.

jeez! that is really cheap for a site. i would've thought they'd be a bit more money than that.

It's that price for domain registration… the actual website is hosted at Wikidot ;-)
