Now that I've moved all STE-related announcements to a separate Twitter account (@wdeditor) instead of mixing them up with my own personal messages, Artimonier does not match any existing user name mentioned to me that he can't use STE because he has a free account here at Wikidot.

I'd like to crush this right here and now as I am sure many other people falsely believe this as well.

Free account holders can also use the Wikidot API!

However, the process is a bit longer for you, most likely as an anti-spammer measure (spammers are unlikely to pay to become Pro users, so they get API keys instantly).

Wikidot.com Pro users:

  1. Go to My Account
  2. Go to Settings
  3. Click on API access
  4. Grab your API key from there!

Wikidot.com Free users:

  1. Request an API key from this page, and wait a few days for it to be granted
  2. Follow the same steps as Pro users (above)

Here's that link again:

Note to site owners

You will also need to enable API access on a per-site basis.

This means going to site manager and enabling API Access. You have control over read/write permissions for two user levels: regular members & site administrators.

No problem :) BTW Michal has already granted keys, shortly after you requested yours:
